"Ikat is an ancient and universal technique in
which threads are bound and tied to resist dye in the dye bath. The process of
tying knots along a skein or bundle of threads encodes each thread with a pattern
that is revealed when woven. There are single, double and compound ikat techniques
found in different textile traditions around the world.
I use the medium of ikat-dyeing to create a painterly image in woven form. Ikat
allows the build up of layers of imagery as the warp and weft each have the potential
of bearing their own image and emotional message. I have also used the Japanese
technique of E-kasuri or pictorial ikat to create a more representational image.
I weave my ikat designs on a simple 4 harness Japanese kimono loom given
to me in 1981 by my SenSei, Tomohiko Inoue. Ikat allows me to explore abstraction
of
an internal landscape as well as a more representational natural landscape."
